Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and re-starts during sleep. These interruptions occur because the airway becomes blocked either due to the relaxation of throat muscles and reduced tissue elasticity (obstructive sleep apnea – OSA) or failure of the brain to send proper signals to the muscles controlling breathing (central sleep apnea – CSA). Symptoms include loud snoring, gasping for air, acid reflux, cognitive impairment, excessive daytime tiredness, and mental fatigue.
